Delhi and several regions across North India are likely to experience intense heat in the coming days, with temperatures expected to rise by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are expected to continue across the plains of northwest and central India on several days this week.
The weather department has forecast a prolonged hot spell across North, North-Western, and Central India, indicating little relief from the scorching temperatures over the next few days.
Delhi-NCR has already begun experiencing the impact of rising temperatures. On Saturday, Safdarjung, considered the city’s base weather station, recorded a maximum temperature of 40 degrees Celsius, which was 0.4 degrees above normal.
According to IMD, temperatures are expected to gradually increase across many parts of Northwest India, including Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana, throughout the week.
“Gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 3-5 degrees Celsius likely over many parts of Northwest India till May 21 and no significant change during May 22-23,” IMD stated in its weekly weather outlook.
The department further said that heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in Rajasthan from May 17 to May 23. Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi may witness a sharp rise in temperatures between May 18 and May 23.
Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are also expected to face heatwave conditions from May 17 to May 21, while parts of Uttar Pradesh could experience moderate to severe heatwave conditions during the week.
In South India, Telangana is also likely to witness high temperatures and hot weather conditions.
Meanwhile, IMD has predicted moderate rainfall accompanied by gusty winds and hailstorms in isolated areas of Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and some parts of West India on May 17 and 18.
Several northeastern states, including Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, are likely to receive rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning on May 18. Heavy rainfall has also been forecast for parts of Arunachal Pradesh during the same period.
