Hyderabad Metro Rail facilitated the transportation of a donor heart and lungs for transplantation on Saturday, enabling their timely movement between two hospitals as part of a life-saving organ transplant operation.
The Metro provided priority medical transit from CARE Hospitals, Gachibowli, to KIMS Hospitals, Minister Road, Secunderabad, completing the journey in just 25 minutes.
The donor organs were transported from Raidurg Metro Station to Rasoolpura Station, covering a distance of around 14 kilometres across 13 metro stations.
According to Hyderabad Metro Rail, the time-sensitive transit was carried out through seamless operational coordination, ensuring the organs reached their destination during the critical transplantation window.
The operation involved close coordination between Hyderabad Metro Rail, healthcare professionals, and hospital authorities, highlighting the Metro's role in supporting emergency medical services and life-saving interventions.
L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited (L&TMRHL) said it remains committed to supporting emergency healthcare initiatives by extending the role of urban transport beyond passenger mobility to facilitate critical medical operations.
Meanwhile, KIMS Hospital, Gachibowli, also announced the successful completion of a robotic-assisted mitral valve replacement on a 37-year-old patient from Rajahmundry, marking a significant achievement in minimally invasive cardiac surgery in Hyderabad.
According to Dr. Nisarga, Chief Cardiothoracic, Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgeon, the patient had been suffering from severe mitral stenosis caused by chronic rheumatic heart disease.
The mitral valve, located between the left atrium and left ventricle, normally allows blood to flow efficiently through the heart. In mitral stenosis, the valve becomes narrowed and thickened, restricting blood flow and increasing strain on the heart. If left untreated, the condition can lead to serious complications.
The robotic-assisted procedure was performed on July 23 and lasted for more than five hours. Dr. Nisarga noted that robotic intracardiac procedures remain relatively uncommon in Hyderabad, making robotic-assisted mitral valve replacement a rare and advanced cardiac surgery in the city.
