Doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dwarka, successfully performed bilateral cochlear implant surgery on a 22-year-old Delhi girl with bilateral profound hearing loss (a condition in which both ears have little to no functional hearing), enabling her to significantly reduce her dependence on lip reading and embark on a new phase of confidence, communication and personal growth.

For Tina Garg, after being diagnosed with hearing loss in early childhood, her family relocated to Chennai to ensure she received early intervention support at a school for young deaf children. There, she developed strong lip-reading skills that became central to her communication and learning. Despite the challenges associated with hearing loss, Tina remained focused on her education and continued to excel academically. With the support of her family, teachers and peers, she pursued her goals with determination and eventually secured admission to IIT Bombay for her undergraduate studies.

Despite her academic achievements, daily communication continued to require significant effort. Relying heavily on lip reading demanded constant concentration and made routine interactions challenging. While researching her condition online, she came across Dr Sumit Mrig’s name. A recommendation from a relative further validated her choice, leading her to consult him at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dwarka Seeking a more comprehensive hearing solution, Tina underwent bilateral cochlear implant surgery, a procedure in which small electronic devices are surgically implanted to directly stimulate the auditory nerve and restore the sensation of sound, under the care of Dr. Sumit Mrig, Director & Unit Head – ENT & Cochlear Implant Surgery, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dwarka. The procedure was successfully performed and was followed by structured auditory rehabilitation to help her adapt to and interpret sounds more effectively.

Commenting on the case, Dr. Sumit Mrig, said, "Profound hearing loss affects multiple dimensions of a person's life, including communication, confidence, education and social interaction. Bilateral Cochlear implantation, when combined with appropriate rehabilitation and long-term support, can significantly improve a person's ability to engage with the world. The goal extends beyond improving hearing access; it is about enabling greater independence and quality of life."

Following the surgery, Tina underwent auditory rehabilitation for 6 months, which gradually helped her experience and interpret sounds in new ways. With reduced dependence on lip reading, she gained greater confidence in communication and self-expression, enabling her to engage more actively in academic, professional and social settings. She subsequently secured admission to IIM Bangalore, marking another significant milestone in her journey.

Reflecting on her experience, Tina shared that every stage of life came with its own challenges, but the support of family, educators and healthcare professionals gave her the confidence to keep moving forward. She described her journey as one that reinforced the importance of believing in possibilities and making courageous choices.

This case highlights Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dwarka's expertise in advanced hearing restoration and comprehensive rehabilitative care, while demonstrating how timely intervention, cutting-edge cochlear implant technology and sustained rehabilitation support can help individuals with hearing loss pursue their aspirations with greater confidence and independence.
