Doctors at Fortis Hospital Manesar have successfully operated and removed a giant 5.4 kg breast tumour from a 44-year-old patient from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The patient had been living with untreated breast cancer since December 2025. By the time she arrived in India, the tumuor had grown to approximately 25 x 25 x20 cm occupying her entire right breast and developing into a large, open, infected wound. A team of doctors led by Dr. Mansi Chowhan, Breast Oncoplastic Surgeon & Senior consultant- Surgical Oncology, Fortis Hospital Manesar, successfully removed the 5.4 kg tumour through complex surgery.
The patient had arrived at Fortis Hospital Manesar in critical condition, complicated by severe anemia (very low blood count), malnutrition, and sepsis (a severe bloodstream infection). The tumour had developed into a large open wound with a foul-smelling discharge. A PET-CT scan confirmed that while the tumour was massive, the cancer had not spread to distant organs or lymph nodes.
Considering her fragile condition, the doctors first focused on improving her overall health and bringing the infection under control before performing the surgery. The team carefully completed the procedure and successfully removed the cancerous breast tumour. As a large portion of the skin was affected, the patient required specialised wound care and a skin graft to cover the surgical area. The graft healed well after the procedure and the patient is recovering well. She will now undergo chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy, after which breast reconstruction is planned.

Before we could operate, it was important to stabilise her overall condition and bring the infection under control. Once she was stable enough, the team carefully planned the surgery to remove the cancerous tumour completely and also manage the large wound that followed. The patient has recovered well from the surgery, and the next phase of treatment will include chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy. This case highlights why changes in breast anatomy should never be ignored and why timely medical evaluation is crucial.”
