Gandhinagar: More than 120 students at J.M. Desai Vidhyamandir School in Jhank village, Dehgam taluka, Gujarat, have reported symptoms such as eye redness, irritation, burning sensation, and double vision, prompting immediate action by health authorities.
Out of the total 225 students enrolled at the school, 122 were affected and taken to Gandhinagar Civil Hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. The first cases emerged on June 30, and as of Wednesday, many students were still experiencing symptoms.
Following the reports, teams from the district administration and Kadadara Primary Health Centre visited the school to carry out an initial investigation and provide preliminary care. Based on their assessment, the affected students were sent to the civil hospital for further tests and monitoring.
At the hospital, doctors conducted thorough examinations including blood and urine tests to rule out serious conditions. Initial results have shown no damage to vital organs such as the kidneys or liver, which has eased the concerns of families. Most students have since been discharged, while two remain under observation due to persistent symptoms.
Authorities confirmed that the health status of the students is stable, with no major complications detected. The hospital also ensured the admitted children received proper meals during their stay.
Despite ongoing efforts, the exact cause of the illness remains unknown. Officials from the health, food safety, and education departments have collected water and food samples from the school and hostel, sending them for laboratory testing.
Over 24 hours since the first symptoms were reported, no definitive cause has been identified. This uncertainty has raised questions about administrative readiness and coordination in responding to sudden health crises.
Officials continue to monitor the situation closely, urging calm as investigations proceed. Ensuring the safety and well-being of the students remains the top priority.
