Chennai: In a significant milestone in orthopaedic care, a 52-year-old patient from Chennai diagnosed with advanced Kienbock’s disease has been successfully treated through a complex hamate fusion procedure with the use of a Herbert screw at Deepam Hospital, Tambaram, Chennai.
The surgery, performed by the expert orthopaedic team headed by Dr R Anantha Kumar, Orthopaedic - Senior Consultant, Deepam Hospitals, Tambaram, has restored mobility and significantly relieved the patient’s pain, offering new hope for individuals suffering from this rare and debilitating condition.
Mrs Tamilarasi (Name Changed), a resident of Korattur, Chennai, presented with pain in her left hand associated with gradual restriction of movement, severely affecting daily activities and quality of life.
The patient was referred to Deepam Hospitals, Tambaram, after thorough evaluation and imaging. Dr R Anantha Kumar decided to perform Hamate Fusion, a specialised surgical technique where the hamate bone is fused to adjacent carpal bones, effectively bypassing the damaged lunate of the patient.
The Herbert Screw, known for its headless design and excellent compression properties, was used to ensure precise and stable fixation, promoting effective bone healing. The patient was discharged from the hospital the next day after the surgery with promising improvement in wrist movement and overall functionality.
Kienbock’s Disease is a rare, progressive condition characterised by the loss of blood supply to the lunate bone in the wrist, leading to bone death, chronic pain, stiffness, and eventual loss of function, said Dr R Anantha Kumar, Orthopaedic - Senior Consultant, Deepam Hospitals.
Hamate fusion with Herbert Screw fixation offered the best chance at pain relief and preserving the wrist function of the patient in a short period. We are pleased to report a successful outcome with excellent recovery and mobility restoration, “added Dr R Anantha Kumar
