Rare Procedure Brings Relief to Patients With Uncontrolled BP

Cardiologists at Fortis Hospital, Greater Noida have successfully performed Rare Advanced Renal Denervation procedure on two patients suffering from resistant hypertension, including one case complicated by hypertensive heart failure. The rare minimally invasive procedure was performed by Dr. Harnish Singh Bhatia, Consultant Cardiology, Fortis Hospital, Greater Noida.

Resistant hypertension is a serious cardiovascular condition in which blood pressure remains dangerously high despite the use of multiple blood pressure-lowering medications at optimal doses. Such patients remain at significantly elevated risk of stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure, and sudden cardiac death.

The first patient, a 68-year-old woman, had been battling complex resistant hypertension for several years. Despite being on six antihypertensive medications at the maximum tolerated doses, her blood pressure persistently remained between 180 - 200 mmSHg. Over three months prior to the procedure, she had experienced multiple hospitalizations for hypertensive heart failure, placing her at extremely high cardiovascular risk. After detailed medical evaluations confirmed resistant hypertension with no reversible secondary cause, the doctors opted for catheter-based renal denervation. The procedure works by selectively ablating overactive sympathetic nerves surrounding the renal arteries, which are known contributors to persistently uncontrolled blood pressure.

The second patient, a 39-year-old man, had early-onset resistant hypertension that remained inadequately controlled despite optimal multidrug therapy. Although his cardiac function remained preserved, his young age placed him at a significantly elevated lifetime risk of major cardiovascular complications, including premature coronary artery disease, stroke, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease. In view of the sustained blood pressure burden and long-term risk profile, renal denervation was undertaken to achieve better blood pressure control and reduce cumulative cardiovascular risk over time.

Giving details of the cases, Giving details of the cases, Dr. Harnish Singh Bhatia, Consultant Cardiology, Fortis Greater Noida, said, “Resistant hypertension is one of the most dangerous yet under-recognised cardiovascular conditions. Both our patients were on six blood pressure–lowering medications, yet their BP remained uncontrolled, leading to repeated heart failure admissions in the first case and significantly elevated long-term cardiovascular risk in the other. Renal denervation allows us to target the root cause - sympathetic overactivity, through a minimally invasive, catheter-based approach. This therapy is emerging as an important treatment option for carefully selected patients who continue to remain uncontrolled despite optimal conventional therapy.”

Siddharth Nigam, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital Greater Noida, said, “The cases reflect the strength of our cardiology team at Fortis Hospital Greater Noida. With these successful interventions, Fortis Greater Noida reinforces its commitment to delivering advanced, evidence-based cardiac care for patients with complex and high-risk cardiovascular conditions, offering renewed hope where conventional therapies fall short. Our commitment remains unwavering in delivering world-class, compassionate care to every patient who walks through our doors.”
