A third person has died in an ongoing Legionnaires' disease outbreak in New York City's Upper East Side, as health authorities continue to monitor the situation. According to the New York City Department of Health, at least 74 people have been infected, while eight patients remain hospitalised. The outbreak has prompted officials to urge residents and visitors in the affected areas to seek medical care if they develop flu-like symptoms. Health Officials Express Concern

Confirming the latest death, New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Alister F. Martin said, "It is with great sadness that I report a third person has died in connection with the Legionnaires' disease community cluster on the Upper East Side. Our hearts are with their family and friends as they mourn their loss."

People who have spent time in the affected ZIP codes 10028, 10075, and 10128, including the Carnegie Hill and Yorkville neighbourhoods, have been advised to watch for symptoms and seek medical attention if they become unwell.

What Is Legionnaires' Disease?

Legionnaires' disease is a serious type of pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacteria. People become infected after breathing in tiny droplets of water contaminated with the bacteria or when contaminated water accidentally enters the lungs.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Legionella bacteria occur naturally in freshwater. However, they become a health risk when they multiply in warm water systems, especially in large buildings. Importantly, Legionnaires' disease does not usually spread from one person to another, but infections can occur if the bacteria get into a building's water supply, including in shower heads, sink faucets, hot water tanks, heaters, cooling towers and other plumbing systems.

Symptoms May Take Up to Two Weeks

The New York City Department of Health says symptoms can appear between two and 14 days after exposure. Common symptoms include:

* High fever

* Chills

* Cough

* Shortness of breath

* Muscle aches

* Headache

* Fatigue

Some patients may also experience diarrhoea or confusion. Since the illness resembles pneumonia, early diagnosis and treatment are important.

Who Is at Greater Risk?

Although many people recover after receiving antibiotics, certain groups are more likely to develop severe illness or life-threatening complications.

People at higher risk include:


* Adults aged 50 years and older

* Smokers and former smokers

* People with chronic lung disease

* Individuals with weakened immune systems

* People with conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease or cancer


What Is Being Done?


According to ABC News, New York health officials believe the source of contamination has likely been eliminated. However, inspections and testing of cooling towers that tested positive for Legionella bacteria are continuing to ensure there is no further spread. There is currently no vaccine to prevent Legionnaires' disease. Experts say the best way to reduce the risk is through proper maintenance and regular disinfection of building water systems, particularly cooling towers and hot water systems. Public health authorities also advise anyone experiencing pneumonia-like symptoms after visiting the affected areas to seek prompt medical attention, as early antibiotic treatment can significantly improve recovery.
