India’s sex ratio improves, government releases new data

India’s sex ratio at birth has improved at the national level, rising from 904 in 2017–19 to 917 in 2021–23, reflecting better survival rates among female children, the government said on Wednesday.

The government released the “Women and Men in India 2025: Selected Indicators and Data” publication in Bhubaneswar, Odisha to provide gender-disaggregated data across a wide range of themes to enable a deeper understanding of evolving gender disparities and development trends, an official statement said.

The publication noted a significant and sustained decline in infant mortality rates for both female and male infants between 2008 and 2023.

The Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education has also improved, increasing from 28.5 to 30.2 for females and from 28.3 to 28.9 for males between 2021–22 and 2022–23.

Labour force participation among individuals aged 15 and above has risen for both genders, with rural women witnessing the highest increase, from 37.5 per cent to 45.9 per cent between 2022 and 2025.

The number of men in managerial positions grew by 73.80 per cent between 2017 and 2025, while the number of women in such roles increased by 102.54 per cent during the same period.

According to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the publication compiles gender-disaggregated indicators covering population, education, health, economic participation, decision-making, violence against women, and other gender-related issues, using data from various ministries, departments, and organisations.

By analysing key socio-economic indicators and highlighting emerging trends, the report aims to support policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders in designing gender-responsive policies and programmes for inclusive and sustainable development.

The publication also includes metadata for 50 key indicators, clarifying concepts, definitions, sources, and methodology, and is available on the official website of MoSPI.
