Delhi State Cancer Institute (DSCI), alongwith SPARE Society, observed Global Fatty Liver Day 2026 with a comprehensive awareness programme focused on the growing burden of fatty liver disease and its increasing association with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common form of liver cancer.
Held at the Institute’s auditorium on Thursday afternoon, the event brought together clinicians, healthcare professionals, nursing staff, dietitians, and public health advocates to discuss the importance of early detection, lifestyle modification, and preventive strategies for fatty liver disease.
The programme commenced with an expert lecture on “Fatty Liver to HCC” delivered by renowned Gastroenterology and Hepatology specialist Dr. Naresh Agrawal, who was invited as the guest speaker for the occasion. In his address, Dr. Agrawal highlighted the rising prevalence of Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD) and emphasized that timely diagnosis and intervention can prevent progression to serious liver complications, including cirrhosis and liver cancer.
An engaging panel discussion on fatty liver disease followed, providing insights into current challenges, emerging treatment approaches, and preventive measures. The discussion featured Dr. Pankaj Tyagi, Head of Department, Gastroenterology, DSCI; Dr. Vasudha Goel, Gastroenterologist; and Ms. Anjuman, Dietician, DSCI, who shared their expertise on managing the disease through multidisciplinary care.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Pankaj Tyagi, Head of Department, Gastroenterology, DSCI, said that "Fatty liver disease is rapidly emerging as one of the most common liver disorders worldwide. The positive aspect is that with early diagnosis, healthier lifestyle choices, and effective management of metabolic risk factors, we can significantly reduce the risk of progression to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Public awareness remains our strongest tool in prevention."
Speaking about the occasion , Dr. Savita Arora, Director, Delhi State Cancer Institute, stated that "The observance of Global Fatty Liver Day reinforces our commitment to preventive oncology and public health. Growing scientific evidence linking fatty liver disease to liver cancer underscores the need for greater awareness, routine screening, and early intervention. Healthcare institutions have a critical role in educating communities and promoting preventive healthcare practices."
Dr. Ravinder Singh, Joint Director, DSCI, in his message said that
"Today's programme served as an important platform for knowledge sharing and multidisciplinary dialogue. By drawing attention to the connection between fatty liver disease and liver cancer, we hope to encourage healthcare professionals as well as the public to take proactive steps towards protecting and improving liver health."
During this scientific session, experts discussed major risk factors contributing to fatty liver disease, including obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, unhealthy dietary habits, and sedentary lifestyles. They emphasized that a significant proportion of cases can be prevented and in many instances reversed through regular physical activity, balanced nutrition, weight management, and periodic health check-ups.
The programme concluded with a collective call for enhanced public awareness, routine screening of high-risk individuals, and stronger integration of liver health initiatives into broader cancer prevention strategies. Participants also reiterated the global message of the campaign: “Love Your Liver”, encouraging individuals to adopt healthier lifestyles and prioritize liver health as a key component of overall well-being.
