In a life-saving intervention, a team of doctors at Fortis Escorts Hospital Faridabad successfully treated a 22-year-old man who sustained a near-fatal gunshot injury during a celebratory firing incident at a birthday gathering in Faridabad. The team of doctors led by Dr. Mohsin Khan, Senior Consultant, GI, Minimal Access & Bariatric Surgery, Fortis Escorts Hospital Faridabad meticulously performed the surgery. The patient recovered well and was discharged in a stable condition within six days.
The patient was rushed to the Emergency Department at Fortis Escorts Faridabad with a bleeding wound near the right lower chest and severe breathing difficulty. Further evaluation and imaging revealed multiple critical internal injuries, including bleeding in the abdomen and chest, liver injury, and multiple fractures on right side ribs making it a high-risk, life-threatening case.
Upon admission at the hospital, quick assessment through CT scans, chest X-rays, heart scans, and lab tests helped doctors quickly understand the criticality of the case and decide on the next steps. The patient underwent an emergency minimally invasive surgical procedure which included diagnostic laparoscopy, control of internal bleeding, removal of metallic pellets, and management of damaged tissues. The procedure lasted approximately for 2–3 hours and was followed by an intensive care monitoring in the ICU.
Giving details of the case, Dr Mohsin Khan, Senior Consultant – GI, Minimal Access & Bariatric Surgery, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad said, “Gunshot injuries like this are deceptive as patients may appear stable initially but the damage can be severe and life-threatening. Such cases require a multi-disciplinary approach, involving trauma surgeons, anesthetists, intensivists, and nursing teams. In this case, the bullet caused significant injury to the liver, lungs and chest wall. Immediate evaluation and timely surgical intervention were critical in preventing a fatal outcome. This was a complex trauma case involving multiple organs and internal bleeding. Our priority was immediate stabilization, controlling the damage and preserving organ function. Even a slight delay in such cases could have resulted in fatal outcomes. However, timely action made all the difference in saving the patient’s life.”
Expressing his gratitude, the 22-year-old patient said, “I was in immense pain and struggling to breathe, and everything felt uncertain. The doctors at Fortis Escorts Hospital Faridabad acted with incredible speed and precision. From the emergency team to the surgeons and ICU staff, everyone worked tirelessly to save my life. I am deeply grateful to Dr. Mohsin Khan and the entire medical team for giving me a second chance.”
Dr Abhishek Sharma, Facility Director, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad said, “This case is a reminder that what is often seen as a celebratory act can turn into a medical emergency within seconds. The patient was fortunate to reach us in time. With prompt diagnosis and timely surgical care, our team was able to control the damage and save his life. This case reinforces that Fortis Faridabad is committed to providing immediate trauma treatment, which saves lives even in dire situations.”
