Doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj, successfully performed a complex ABO-incompatible kidney transplant, helping save the life of a 49-year-old businessman after his 18-year-old son selflessly donated his kidney.
Ahead of Father's Day, the story of Mr. Abid Raza and his son, Ali Raza, stands as a remarkable example of love, courage, and the possibilities created by advances in modern transplant medicine.
Mr. Abid Raza was diagnosed with rapidly progressive kidney failure caused by a rare autoimmune condition that severely damaged his kidneys. As his condition worsened, he became dependent on dialysis while waiting for a kidney transplant. With no compatible donor available within the family, the options before him were becoming increasingly limited.
At this critical juncture, his son, Ali Raza, stepped forward and made a life-changing decision to donate his kidney, offering his father a renewed chance at life. Ali had always been a bright and determined student with a keen interest in science. Having secured 92 percent in his Class 12 examinations, he was looking forward to pursuing a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree and building a career in the field of science and research. Despite being at a crucial stage in his academic journey, he did not hesitate when the opportunity arose to help save his father's life, placing his family's well-being above all.
However, during the evaluation process, doctors identified a significant challenge. Ali's blood group was B+, while his father's blood group was O+, making them medically incompatible for a conventional kidney transplant.
Rather than ruling out the possibility, the multidisciplinary transplant team at Max Hospital, Patparganj, developed a carefully planned ABO-incompatible transplant strategy. Through advanced desensitisation protocols, intensive immunological preparation, plasmapheresis procedures and meticulous perioperative care, the team successfully overcame the blood-group barrier and made the life-saving transplant possible.
Speaking about the case, Dr. Ravi Kumar Singh, Senior Consultant, Nephrology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj, said, “Kidney transplantation remains the best treatment option for patients with end-stage kidney disease. ABO-incompatible transplantation is one of the major advances in transplant medicine that allows us to offer hope to patients who may otherwise struggle to find a suitable donor. In this case, the patient had a complex medical history requiring careful planning and close monitoring throughout the transplant journey. The successful outcome demonstrates how modern immunological protocols and multidisciplinary expertise can help overcome significant barriers to transplantation."
Following the transplant, Mr. Abid showed excellent graft function, with the transplanted kidney functioning immediately after surgery. His kidney function improved significantly during recovery, and he was discharged in stable condition within a week. Ali also recovered well after the donor surgery and was discharged within 4 days.
Speaking further on the case, Dr. Paresh Jain, Senior Director, Urology and Kidney Transplant Surgery, at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj said, "What makes this case particularly memorable is the extraordinary commitment shown by such a young donor. Organ donation is a profound act of generosity, and Ali's decision reflects remarkable courage and maturity. Equally important was ensuring the safety and well-being of both donor and recipient throughout the process. With careful evaluation, meticulous surgical planning, and comprehensive post-operative care, both father and son have recovered well."
The successful outcome further reinforces Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj's expertise in advanced kidney transplantation and complex ABO-incompatible transplants, supported by a multidisciplinary team committed to delivering world-class transplant care and improving patient outcomes.
