Covid-19 Cases Continue to Rise in Manipur, Positivity Rate at 30.5%

Imphal: Covid- 19 cases are continuing to rise in Manipur, with 18 new cases reported on Wednesday. This brings the total number of active cases in the state to 189, according to the state Health Department.

Officials said that 59 samples were tested, and 18 came back positive, giving the state a positivity rate of 30.5%, which is considered high. The new infections were reported from four districts:

Imphal West: 13 cases

Imphal East: 3 cases

Chandel: 1 case

Thoubal: 1 case

So far, most of the active cases are concentrated in Imphal West (131 cases) and Imphal East (43 cases). The remaining active cases are from Thoubal (7), Bishnupur (4), Tengnoupal (2), and Kakching and Chandel (1 case each). Except for Tengnoupal and Chandel, the rest are part of the Imphal Valley.

Currently, 138 patients are recovering at home under home isolation.

The first Covid-19 case in this wave was detected on June 9, when a 23-year-old woman from Bishnupur district tested positive after developing symptoms. She had visited a private clinic in Imphal on June 5, and the test result confirmed her infection a few days later.

Health experts say the recent rise in cases is due to several reasons, such as:

People not following Covid precautions

Fewer people getting booster vaccine doses

New, more contagious variants of the virus

People spending more time indoors during the monsoon, increasing the risk of transmission

In response, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla held a high-level review meeting at Raj Bhavan to discuss the situation. He met with Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh and senior health officials to assess the state's readiness.

The governor was informed about the availability of testing, oxygen supplies, ICU beds, medicines, and isolation wards. He emphasized the need for early action, proper medical facilities, and public awareness to handle any further rise in cases effectively.
