Doctor Warns Rising Endometriosis Cases in Delhi Linked to Pollution and Endotoxins

New Delhi: Is Delhi’s Air Silently Affecting Women’s Fertility?

In a worrying new trend, Delhi is witnessing a steep rise in endometriosis cases, particularly among women aged 30 to 35. Health experts are sounding the alarm over a growing link between this painful condition and environmental factors.

Nearly 40% of these cases are now being associated with endotoxins and pollution, a sharp jump from previous years, when only around 15% were linked to such causes.

Dr Aswati Nair, Fertility Specialist at Nova IVF Fertility, Rajouri Garden, Delhi, explains how the city’s worsening environment is taking a silent toll on women’s reproductive health.

"Almost 40% of new endometriosis cases in Delhi are now associated with the presence of endotoxins, which are harmful substances produced by bacteria that trigger inflammation. These toxins, combined with the city’s high pollution levels, are acting as hidden aggravators. In earlier years, only about 15% of endometriosis cases were linked to such causes. Women in the 30–35 age group are mainly vulnerable, especially those who delay conception. Environmental factors, poor air quality, and increased stress levels are all playing a role in this uptick," she said.

Endometriosis is a chronic condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterine cavity. This can cause inflammation, scarring, and painful cysts.

Common symptoms include chronic pelvic pain, severe menstrual cramps, pain during or after intercourse, heavy bleeding, digestive issues, and infertility. Because its symptoms often mimic other conditions, diagnosis is frequently delayed, which can worsen outcomes.

Dr Nair emphasizes the importance of early detection and management, especially as the condition is influenced by a complex mix of genetic, hormonal, and environmental triggers.

"While there is no known cure for endometriosis, the symptoms can be managed by regular gynaecological check-ups. Even lifestyle changes such as including a healthy anti-inflammatory diet, exercise, stress management, medication to control pain and hormone levels, surgery to remove endometrial tissue, and limiting exposure to pollutants are key. Those women with endometriosis who are unable to conceive should consult a fertility expert who will suggest ARTs such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), egg freezing, or intrauterine insemination (IUI). The expert will decide the procedure suitable for you. Follow the guidelines given by the expert and fulfil the dream of motherhood," she added.

Doctors advise women experiencing ongoing menstrual pain or difficulty conceiving to seek timely medical attention. With early diagnosis and targeted treatment, they say, it’s possible to manage the condition and improve both quality of life and fertility outcomes.
