What are Delayed or Skipped Periods?
Skipped or delayed periods can be concerning for many women. Medically, this condition is referred to as amenorrhea, which the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development defines as “the absence of a menstrual period.”
Amenorrhea is categorized into two types: primary and secondary. Primary amenorrhea occurs when a girl has not had her first period by the age of 16. Secondary amenorrhea refers to the absence of menstruation for more than three cycles in women who previously had regular periods.
Common causes of secondary amenorrhea include intense physical activity, pregnancy, obesity, eating disorders like anorexia nervosa, a family history of amenorrhea, premature menopause, and genetic factors.
What is PCOD?
Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) is a hormonal condition influenced by genetic and lifestyle factors. Normally, ovaries release fully matured eggs during the menstrual cycle. In PCOD, they often release immature or partially matured eggs, which may form multiple fluid-filled cysts, causing the ovaries to enlarge. The condition is marked by elevated levels of androgens (male hormones), leading to symptoms like irregular menstruation, abdominal weight gain, male-pattern hair thinning, and sometimes infertility.
Can PCOD be cured?
As per UNICEF, PCOD cannot be permanently cured due to its genetic and hormonal nature. However, its symptoms can be effectively managed through lifestyle interventions—such as healthy eating, regular exercise, and stress management.
What are the Health Benefits of Ghee, ajwain, daalchini and jaggery?
Ghee provides substantial nutritional value thanks to its rich composition. Derived from milk, cream, or butter by removing nearly all water and non-fat solids, ghee is composed of approximately 99.5% fat and under 0.5% moisture. It is an excellent source of fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K, which are essential for maintaining healthy vision, strong bones, immune system support, and proper blood clotting. Ghee also contains phospholipids that aid in maintaining cellular structure and function.
Ajwain also known as Cumin has long been valued in traditional medicine for its therapeutic properties and numerous health benefits. It is a rich source of antioxidants, iron, and fiber, which support digestion and strengthen the immune system. Cumin may also possesses anti-inflammatory effects.
Daalchini, commonly known as Cinnamon, is often referred to as the "eternal tree of tropical medicine" and is widely used as a daily spice across the globe. It contains powerful bioactive compounds such as cinnamaldehyde, cinnamic acid, and cinnamate, which are responsible for its many health benefits. Cinnamon is recognized for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, and cardioprotective properties. It may aid in reducing cholesterol levels and promoting heart health.

Can desi ghee, ajwain, daalchini and jaggery induce periods and cure PCOD?
The claim that desi ghee, ajwain (carom seeds), daalchini (cinnamon), and jaggery can fix period imbalance and cure PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) is false and unsupported by scientific evidence. While some of these ingredients may have effects on period pain and managing PCOD, they do not constitute a treatment or cure for PCOD or reliably regulate menstrual cycles.
Ajwain may help relieve menstrual pain. A study by Fatemeh Zali et. al. suggests that ajwain could be effective in reducing period-related discomfort. However, there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that ajwain can induce periods or treat PCOD.
Emerging evidence suggests that cinnamon (daalchini) may offer benefits in managing PCOD. A systematic review and meta-analysis by Fatemeh Heydarpour and colleagues highlights that cinnamon supplementation could improve metabolic parameters in women affected by the condition.
While ajwain and daalchini may help in relieving periods pain and managing PCOD, there is no scientific evidence or medical consensus to support the claim that they can induce periods and cure PCOD. Moreover, in cases where amenorrhea is due to pregnancy, such home remedies, including cumin and jaggery, are ineffective in triggering menstrual bleeding.

Dr Kekin Gala, Gynecologist, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Mumbai told Medical Dialogues, "Currently, a large number of people tend to rely on home remedies and suffer in silence. However, it is advised for everyone to seek an expert’s help instead of trying out any unverified remedies that can land you in trouble. It is believed that using Desi ghee, ajwain, dalchini (cinnamon), and jaggery can cure PCOD and regulate menses. But this is not true at all. PCOD is a hormonal issue that needs proper treatment and guidance from a doctor. While these ingredients may help with digestion or improve energy, they do not help to tackle the hormonal imbalance that is often seen because of PCOD. When it comes to managing PCOD, the expert will advise following a well-balanced diet, exercise, and sometimes medicines can also be given to the patient. It’s always best to follow medical advice rather than trust unproven home solutions. It is not at all safe to follow any trend blindly without the doctor’s knowledge. So, stay vigilant when it comes to your health."

To this, Dr Mansi Sharma, Consultant- Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospital, Kharadi, added, "These ingredients, such as ghee, ajwain, dalchini (cinnamon), and jaggery, are considered to be natural remedies and are known to work wonders for your health. There is no evidence available regarding the claim that these things can induce periods or cure PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease). These ingredients may help ease digestion and promote general wellness, but they do not help with menstrual issues or treat PCOS. For managing PCOD, women will require prompt medical attention from their doctor. So, don’t just believe any rumours or posts forwarded on social media. Relying solely on home remedies can delay appropriate care and worsen symptoms like irregular periods, weight gain, acne, and infertility that are seen due to PCOD. Lifestyle changes, medications, and regular follow-ups play a vital role when it comes to managing PCOD. Always consult a gynaecologist before trying any unverified natural treatment for PCOD. It is essential to follow the guidelines given by the expert only. Don’t try any remedies on your own, as doing so can be hazardous to your health."
