Ozempic buzz: Are people ignoring liver health basics? - Dr Vivek Kumar Singh

With Ozempic becoming increasingly popular for weight loss and diabetes management, it’s important to pause and ask—are we overlooking the basics of liver health?

As a doctor, I’ve been seeing a growing number of patients who are keen on quick,effective solutions for weight loss. Medications like Ozempic belong to a class called GLP-1 receptor agonists. They work by mimicking a natural hormone in the bodythat regulates appetite, slows down stomach emptying and helps control blood sugar levels. This combination leads to reduced hunger and, over time, meaningful weight loss.

In recent years, similar medications such as higher-dose semaglutide formulations and other GLP-1-based medications have gained attention not just for diabetes, but also for obesity management. When used under medical supervision, they can help patients lose 10–15% (or more) of their body weight, which is significant and can improve multiple health parameters, including blood sugar, cholesterol and even fatty liver.

However, what often gets missed in the conversation is that no medication can replace the foundation of good liver health. The liver is one of the body's hardest-working organs‚ processing everything we eat and drink and helping to detoxify what we don't need‚ as well as being central to metabolism․ Fatty Liver Disease is now extremely common due to sedentary lifestyles‚ poor diet and increasing stress levels․

Even though these medications‚ including Ozempic‚ lead to some weight loss‚ the fatty liver still remains‚ and without lifestyle changes after the weight loss‚ they can give the patient a false sense of security․ Patients assume that if they are getting thinner‚ their liver is also getting healthier‚ but that is not always true․

It should also be noted that these medications are not a magic bullet and can have side effects including nausea‚ vomiting‚ constipation‚ diarrhea‚ and in some cases more serious side effects that may include gallbladder disease․ This treatment is not for everyone․ The medication must always be taken under the supervision of a physician. Weight regain may also occur when the medication is discontinued‚ especially without a healthy lifestyle․

This World Liver Day‚ let's embrace simple and sustainable changes for healthier liver choices․ Eating fruits‚ vegetables‚ whole grains‚ and healthy fats can help maintain a healthy liver․ Eating large quantities of processed food‚ sugar‚ and fried food can cause excessive fat accumulation in the liver․

Second‚ exercising regularly by getting 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days (which may be something as simple as a brisk walk) promotes liver health and metabolism․

Third‚ keep alcohol consumption to nil․ Most individuals do not realize that the liver suffers from moderate‚ routine drinking in the long run․Fourth‚ regular health checks are important‚ since most types of liver disease do not show symptoms until some degree of liver damage has already occurred․ Simple blood tests and images can be helpful for diagnosis․

Finally‚ use caution with medications and dietary supplements‚ especially if you take them in large amounts; this may harm your liver․ Even with something that seems harmless‚ always check with a healthcare provider first․

Ozempic and similar medications can be powerful tools when used correctly but they are just one part of the puzzle. True liver health still comes down to consistency in daily habits, mindful eating, and an active lifestyle. My advice: don’t let the rise of “quick fixes” distract you from the basics. Your liver doesn’t need trends, it needs care, balance, and long-term commitment.
